PS3 sales jump in Japan, increase ten-fold in UK 'ahead of expectations'

article published on 7 September, 2009

Following a disastrous week for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) platform in Japan in the week ending August 30th, which witnessed just 1040 unit sales, the PS3 Slim has injected new life into the platform. In the week ending September 6th, sales of the PS3 Slim in Japan jumped to 150,252 units (150,832 units of all PS3 SKUs combined), according to Kotaku. The sales increase marks the highest ... [ read the full article ]

Not surprising really lets hope they stop with the unnecessary downgrading(I mean is the PS"X" the only system to get downgraded through revisions?) in future models....

I don't think the PS3 will ever outsell the Xbox 360.

I don;t think the 360 will ever catch up to the WII, its at least nice to know both combined is a couple million more than the WII. LOL

But lets look at saturation and momentum the 360 is everywhere, the PS3 not so much and because gamers tend to buy all the consoles available over time the PS3 should get within 5M of the 360 in a year or 2 and might well surpass it in 3 to 5.

only to be expected, everybody knew the slim was on its way so put off buying one, the only people that bought the previous version would be the tec heads who didn't want to lose "OtherOS"

p.s. shouldn't that "week ending August 6" read week ending September 6 ?

Yes, thanks! :-) I'm also adding some text from Sony about the sales, given to GamesIndustry.biz here -> http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/so...of-expectations

And I find it hard to believe people think the 360 will sell 100+ Million. Won't happen. The 360 will be hard pressed to make it passed 50 Million. The PS3 will outsell the 360 in due time the 10 year plan vs 5-6 will be the deciding factor there. And preliminary totals for World Wide sales of the PS3 Slim in one week are reaching/estimating 500,000..."thems" is Christmas & launch sales numbers.

The point here is not what the initial spike in sales will be, it is how sustained that lift in sales will be.

We all know people were holding off waiting on the slim,

Come on Man :-) You know the "ten year plan" is just a marketing term. I know the PS2 had a long life, but that's kinda easy when you are safely on top and can basically dictate the entire time. Xbox 360 is definitely going to have its own problems though in the long term, not the least of which is Japan. If the PS3 Slim sales prove anything, a hardware revision changes a lot very quickly, at least in the short term. It will be interesting going into Christmas to see what changes.

The hardware in the 360 peaked in 2008, it's already outdated. The PS3 was designed from go to be a next-gen system that will last over a 10 year cycle. The only thing the 360 ever had over the PS3 was it was much cheaper and thus more accessible. With both systems the same price, it's game over for the cheaper systems only leverage. It will no doubt outsell the 360. And yes market saturation of the 360 will be it's biggest set-back. I hate to say i told you so, but come this time next year I'm fairly confident the PS3 will be the dominant system. And I'll be here to tell you.

And that's not a PS3 fanboy fantasy, it's a reality the 360 fanboys that have been ragging on the PS3 for years are going to have to accept.

lets just hope developers see the new incentives to start making exclusives for the PS3. i hate multi-platform games, they take away bragging rights.

thing is the PS2 is still selling, and games are still being made for it. its what, 8-9 years into its lifecyle? the PS3 will probably have a 10 year cycle, but 6-8 years into its life im sure the PS4 will come out.

You're just giving your slanted opinion.

If you look you'll find that the PS3 has an ancient Nvidia 7800GS based GPU.
That's hardly "next gen".

The Cell itself, whilst interesting and optimised for some tasks (number crunching especially) has umteen limitations and peculiarities all of its own when it comes to gaming and which are not very helpful (the SPEs cannot operate independantly like the cores of the Xbox CPU for instance).

Will PS3 overtake Xbox?
That's highly unlikely now.
IIRC they would have to sustain doubled sales until 2012.
By which time everyone will have moved on to the next gen anyways.

(and when you say "dominant console" you're obviously forgetting to add 'except for the Wii' cos PS3 stands absolutely no chance whatsoever of catching and passing the Wii - and yes, it's highly unlikely Xbox could do it either)

And how many people actually thinks about what kind of hardware is inside when buying a console? I think that PS3 can put out graphics that are good enough for pretty much everybody, so I don't see any reason to think that people won't buy PS3 because of what kind of GPU it has inside. If I want the newest possible GPU and CPU I buy a PC. When I want quality games from 90s to this day, I buy a console. And by 2012 I think we perhaps see only the launch of the new next gen, and there's a loooong way from that to when "everyone will have moved on to the next gen".

hmm i believe ive done well not to buy any of the current "next gen" consoles..but i also would like to interject and remind everyone of nintendos claim that they would be releasing a revamped "Wii2" by 2011-2012. it was on the site news a few months back when they were asked about why isnt the Wii a full on entertainment package like its rivals..to which they anwsered(translated from corporate greedy pig speech):first we gunna let'em buy the useless Wii that gets boring in an hour for another year or 2 till sales r lagging and then well launch the real entertainment package including HD , HDD etc" so we know that at least 1 new "next gen" console wil be coming out in the next year or 2. and that can only lead me to believe that at least one of the rivals either sony or MS would release their correspondent next gen consoles. conclusively i think it best to wait ~2 years..cuz 2 years may sound like a long time but all gamers know that in console terms it really isnt..

Glad to see the PS3 finally getting the sales it deserves. It's a decent piece of technology but the lackluster marketing has harmed sales, in my opinion.

I agree. Time to resurrect epic Sonic vs. Mario type debates! So much fun all those years ago arguing in the playground over which franchise was better! At least then a fan boy could make a pertinent argument (instead of my cell processor is better than yours! lol) All I care about is the games, and as they say, variety is the spice of life.

With the PS3 at a competitive price for the first time, the playing field has finally be leveled.

From here on out we'll see which console the consumers truly desire the most. I read an article on Vgchartz saying the PS3 sold over 500K units in one week. This will be a very interesting holiday season.

They actually updated that to nearly 600,000. Though I take VGChartz numbers with a grain of salt, they can be close in their estimations form time to time...I mean a broken clock is right twice a day isn't it?

I see another couple of months of great PS3 sales. Especially with Uncharted 2 coming in about a month. A few buddies of mine were already talking about the price cut and how this Holiday season will be a Sony season. As for those that feel they've done good by not buying any of the next-gen consoles, really what fun is that? :P

Sonic vs. Mario....lol, can't wait for that one!

With the price playing field leveled and blockbuster exclusives coming out, it's time to pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the show!

I really don't see the slim beating the elite, I much rather prefer the normal ps3 over the slim.

Btw the price differences are stupid, in australia, the slim is $499, $499 aud = $430 usd, that's $130 usd more for the slim in australia than it is in the US. Both ms and sony have to create even prices, it's stupid that because you don't live in the us, you have to pay more money than the currency differences.

Meh I write them off with a error ratio of +/- 5% its a good mersuering stick/sales pulse taker but little else.
