Kaz Hirai has just announced from GamesCom the eagerly anticipated PS3 Slim with a 120 GB Harddrive @ $299 US, 299 EU (£249 for the UK) & 29,980 YEN available September 1st 2009 worldwide. It's 32% smaller and 36% lighter than the standard PlayStation 3, as well as uses 34% less power. It loses it's OtherOS feature but gains Bravia Sync so when it is connected via HDMI you can use your TV's remote to control the XMB and when you power off your TV it auto shuts off the PS3 as well.

The price drop affects all current models as of right now by $100 (via Sony's EU Blog but supposedly tomorrow the drop kicks in for the US). In addition the oft rumored Firmware 3.0 has also been announced/confirmed along with a PSN upgrade which is set to be released Sept 1st 2009.

Your friend in nam is not lying. She has a modded PS2, and the modder was generous enough to relabel the PS2 to PS3.
Then the pirate selling games relabeled Assassins Creed 1 and called it Assassins Creed 2. This is called marketing.
Your friend is honest and thinks she plays AC2 on a PS3. In reality she is playing AC1 on a PS2.

I said if before and I will say it again. This time I am glad I was one of the early adopters of the PS3. Paying what I paid for back when the PS3 was released has so far turned out great for me.
What's with the buttons the eject and power? Ugly. No? I am happy with the new additions with the 3.0 firmware upgrade. I like the new "tabs" or window that's now incorporated with the PS store. I also liked the new ticker. Never used the old one in fact I turned it off completely. Now I may leave it up since it shows now if you have a new message from your friends. I do wish that Sony would let us use our own avatar but I understand why they don't want to.

I have a 60 and a 40, my plan is to store the 60gb wile it is still in perfect condition, i will sell the 40 and i will buy the slim one.
Just hope that the slim makes less noise than the other 2 and the BD drive is faster.I will measure it by installing DMC4.

About the features they removed or havent apply
I have the 60 from day 1 and i have never played PS2/PSX games, even tho that i must have more than 50 originals just for PS2,
But for those that wants BWC, have in mind that as far as sony still sells PS2 consoles, BWC is out of the map.
1st they have to kill PS2 and have available PS2 games to PSStore and then they will bring BWC back.

I cant care less for linux.
If i needed linux i would have them installed to my pc as dual boot or to my mac.

As for media (actualy downloaded MKV's = BD-Rips)
IMO this will never happen.
BD=Sony, to have their own machine able to play content that is pirated from them... well i donr think so, especially with sony.
Streaming or what i have done.
WD-TV + 2x1TB Seagate + IB-3218StU-B + HDMI Cable about 270-300 euros and you are done, NO BD player needed, no fat limitations, no encoding/transcoding and all that.

What i need from PS3 is games, i dont care exclusives or not.
Starting from 4th Q 2009 to 2010 i think this will be a great gaming period with Releases like
Gran Turismo 5
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
Uncharted 2
Quantum
Dante's Inferno
Bioshock 2

From Engadget

Quote:
While our tests were far from thorough, the initial results from our quick-and-dirty decibel ratings show some promise. With a baseline of 49 decibels, the Slim averaged 53 to 56 db when in use / playing a game / installing data (in this case, Metal Gear Solid 4), compared to the 55 to 58 db of the original. Blu-ray movie playback is where it becomes noticeable, as the slim peaked for us at 60 db when the original was doing 70 db running the same disc.
Additionally I don't believe the BD drive is faster.

Can't believe they're dropping the otherOS feature. That's a major blow. OtherOS is the most used feature I get out of my PS3; very likely i use that more than the gaming portion of the PS3. I knwo that I am in the minority here but the PS3 is literally losing all of its pluses that I used say why it was better than the xbox. Man, am I glad I got my 80GB with backwards compatability.

People bitched about items A, B, C, D etc and now that they are gone they have a less expensive console...If they wanted items A, B, C & D they should have bought one that had those items like we did (got an 80gb BC also with a launch day 20gb as well). I myself would like a PS3 Slim but because it does have so much stripped out of it I can wait until they drop to sub $150 in the future...I need my YDL with ZeroGameProject installed ;)

i think the main reason sony took out othesos is to save money by not using the extra chip that is required but i'm not so sure about that so please correct me if i'm wrong, and same reason for the push button.

your right about the Emotion Engine and the previous ps2 graphics card, but the newer 80gb and 160gb were able to run linux and the slim was supposed to be exactly the same as the older models.

wen i said chip i was not referring to the EE or GS, sorry for the confution. i was referring to the extra flash chip used to store the otheros apart from the gameos
