Sony unveils PS3 firmware 3.15 with Minis, data transfer

article published on 8 December, 2009

Sony has unveiled the latest firmware upgrade for the PS3 today, version 3.15, which brings two main new features. The first is the addition of the PSP Mini emulator to the PS3, allowing for playback of the Minis from your home console as well as your handheld. If you own any Minis already for the PSP, you can re-download it free from the PS Store for the PS3. The second feature is ... [ read the full article ]

this was made so that you can get your save data on to a bigger HHD. i wish this came out when i upgraded my PS3 hard-drive to 320gb, this would have been so much easier.

Opening up the system to remove the HD is above most users confidence level. There's no removable external hd like there is on the 360. But from what I hear about the prices on those 360hd's is that they're too expensive anyway.

Pretty glad that theres a PSP Mini emulatpr with this FW update. Now I wish there was a PSP emulator update. That would be killer.

BTW, when is the date for this FW release?

If you can have downloaded content activated to both systems,
and this method just adds the staff to the HDD without deleting anything.....
This way will be easier to trade downloadable content, and you dont even reduce the times that you can re-download your purchased content from PSS.

The PS3's HDD IS removeable and also upgradeable with using laptop hardrives. A screwdriver is all that is needed. You hardly need to disassemble a PS3 to remove the HDD.

Also, you can't just remove a hard drive in a PS3 and put it into another PS3 because the other PS3 will have to format the data on the HDD from the previous PS3.

The removable HDD feature is just so you can upgrade to a larger hard drive.

Actually, the 3.10 did wreck my system. I'm not mad though, they'll do the right thing and get it working back to normal.

Why can't I just transfer game saves via a USB thumbdrive?

You can, but some game makers request that their gamesaves are locked so you can't.

They should have done this before the launch of the slim...I bet they did some study that showed that people were not upgrading to the slim because of concerns over the work involved, locked gamesaves & DRM videos. Once it could be translated into sales, they had immediate incentive to fix the issue.

BTW...does this whole transfering DRM protected content over a standard network cable, direct to the PS3 system partition give anyone else any ideas? ;) ;)

They don't seem to set the torque very well...three of my screws were just finger-tight...the other felt like it was welded in! It must be done by a robot; no one would accidentaly tighten a screw that much.

That doesn't work. I went from a PS3 60GB to a PS3 slim and if you just swap the hard drives, the PS3 can't use that data since it's console-locked and will format the drive.

I had to use an external drive, backup and restore on the new PS3. Moreover, certain content didn't get transfered, like some old save game files.

I think this transfer feature is a great addition, but unfortunately, too late for me :'( (I've lost my Eye of Judgment save and won't put in the extra hours to get the last trophy of 100 duels, now)

Yes...I believe Sony made that clear quite some time ago as I remember reading that tidbit when I upgraded my 60GB to a 250GB over a year ago. It would also make sense not to allow 'Other OS'-formatted HDs to be put into new PS3 Slim units that don't support it.

What you said highlighted in bold cracks me up. slim and upgrade are contradictory of each other.

connect the two ps3s together? fail!

most people will only get another ps3 when the old one dies as happened with my ps 1s (3 died still got the fourth) and 2s (2 died still got the third)

So, you mean to say that you've gone through 5 dead PS systems total?? Where are you storing your systems, in the oven? If I were in your position, I probably would've given up on Sony by now if not on gaming altogether... geez, bad luck man.

I was sooo hoping when I read up on this the other day that it would be the PS Cloud I read about a long while back...but it's not. Sony really needs to have a solution for us that have multiple PS3's and want...scratch that ~ NEED to have a shared/cross network gamesave solution of some sort to centralize our saves (if possible). Hopefully from what I read PS Cloud is that solution...question remains to IF and WHEN it may materialize.

Nothing major in my book. My question is what update is this firmware upgrading going to be doing that we don't know about.
