Walkman gets rare victory over iPod in Japan

Tokyo-based marketing research firm, BCN Inc., has said that Sony Walkman players managed to outsell Apple's iPod line-up in Japan last week - the first time it has happened in four years. Despite once being the kind of portable music, and revolutionizing how music fans listen to music with the original Walkman, Sony has had to stay in the shadow of Apple in the portable digital media player market.

Hmmmm, must be getting pretty cold in Hell right now. Or people are very slowly realizing iPods are immensely over priced. My neice begged me to get her a touch and i balked to se the 16gb touch cost as much as the 120gb classic.
16 for the same price as 120???? = rip-off.

You haven't used one have you???
120 GB classic can't do a few things:
1. WiFi connection (Internet, email, and skype phone...3Gen iPod only)
2. Better games and apps.
3. Actually watch the movies you put on it!
4. Touch screen (goes without saying).
5. The ability to Jailbrake.
The iPod Touch line has got some really good features...the above mentioned are just some. It's also much better when jailbroken.
Can you put Wolfenstine on your 120 GB classic?
And how much music do you really listen to. 120GB of music is a lot of stuff.

wow wolfenstein on my $300 ipod thats awesome!! idiots... congratulations my psp can do all this and it was $60 used already with custom firmware lol

Not sure if it's just me, but all I want out of a music/mp3 player is just that, to play music with good audio. That's it. Nothing more.

No, but if i want to play MUCH better games, watch movies, surf the interwebs on Wi-Fi I can use my PSP. Which IMHO is a far better unit to handle everything you listed. When i want music...i use my ipod. By the way i can put custom firmware (the PSP equivalent of jail breaking) on my PSP and play wolfenstien for free with better control and much nicer screen.
Only a fool would buy a 16gb ipod touch for twice as much as a PSP, or the same price as a 120gb ipod.
You want music? ipod
you want everything else you listed...PSP

There's a typo in the article. I think you meant to say "the king" not "the kind". lol.
Also, a touch screen device for a child is a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE IDEA. Oh, did I mention it was a.. TERRIBLE IDEA?

And no, unfortunately, all of Apples devices are known to have poor sound reproduction, even if coupled with high quality ear buds. You can significantly improve the sound quality by replacing the stock firmware on their devices with 3rd party firmware. But unfortunately, you shouldn't HAVE to do that to get good sound. There are devices out there, with much higher capacity, a lot more format compatibility, and significantly higher sound reproduction, at a fraction of the cost.

I was comparing an iPod to a Sony Walkman.

Buy what you want. Use what you want, in any way you want.

I think that the price is kinda justified...if you consider what you can do with the extra stuff that you get.

I never said you did, insult me that is, that comment was directed at Hopium actually.
I did say that 16GB for the same price as 120= rip off only if they are both the classic iPod.
Not even going to mention the whole reading comprehension thing.

Hey, I have great respect for Sony products, but they seemed to have lost their "edge in competition", especially recently. Just don't seem to appeal as much as used to. Don't get me wrong, I admire Sony, and i actually bought one of the Walkman 2gb mp3 players and was impressed. Didn't have no microSD slot, but Sony's known for their own off-the-wall formats and cards, and that's to be expected of them. It just seems that the excitement they once had, has well, just fizzled out. Sony need to be more competitive with more products and more exciting features, and this is the only way they can come of top. That, and they need to listen to their consumers who buy their products, bc after all, we can make or break them in the long run.

its a niche there not loosing there edge. you see its a blunder really why pay 109 dollars to simply fill the on the go audio segment when there are cheaper more multi-efficient routes.
the main thing Sony and Apple both have is brand power, to sell on that alone is frightening as it allows for stagnation to set in.

I set up my boss's new MP3 player tonight (had to transfer MP3s over). The thing was $20 at target, and it has a micro-sdhc slot. It runs on a single watch battery that recharges via the same USB cable used to load music onto the built-in 2GB memory. More, it has far better sound quality than the iPhone3G. It may not have mobile internet, wifi, a touch screen, or any of that...but it does it's job, and it does it well. Again, if you want to play video games, get a PSP (it will play MP3's also, but it is a bit large to carry everywhere). These iPods and Walkman units are just overpriced garbage that could never compete in an even competition with the ultra-economy units. It's one thing for the iPhone to have bad MP3 playback, as it was an afterthought...but it is quite another thing for a music player to not be able to play music well.

Probably unrelated to current controversy on prices and I certainly do not know the price of an iPod nano. The point I am trying to make is that my grand-nephew ( if such a term exists for relationship) picked up a chenese ripoff of iPod nano for US$ 9/= equivalent on the streets of Mumbai India.
He was very happy with the quality of sound ( compared to his original iPod with wifi - whichever model it might be) + morethan 17 hours of battery life and still going strong.
My daughter on the other hand received an iPod as a graduation gift which conked out within 3 months and had to send it to Bangalore - at her cost of course - for a replacement which also conked out after 10 months (Blank display) which she finally abandoned after learning the replacement cost, close to US$ 90/= equivalent.
