hey guys,

first off, I don't really know too much about HD MKV files and after running a few searches I was still unclear about the best place to post this. If it's in the wrong forum, my apologies!

I have a Samsung 720p HD TV which I use with the Freeagent Theatre to play HD MKV files.

I know that 700-1400mb is the accepted standard for Divx/Xvid movies. Is there a corresponding standard (or rough comparison) for 720p MKV files?

That is to say, if my system can't display the bump in quality above 720p and don't want to waste space looking for higher resolution MKV files than I need... should I be downloading ~4GB MKV movies... or 6-8GB MKV movies?

Thanks!!!

I guess the only way to really tell, is to try it out.
Is it a movie with lot of action? A lot of dark scenes? Longer than usual? If that's the case, the extra size might give you better quality.

I am already practicing the "try it out" method

Just hoping there is a more technical / logical way to do it...

Is there no standard or rough file size to target?

I don't think there is a "scientific", formula. It is all about preferences, same as with the AVI files.
People that would rather save time/space and bandwidth go with the ~700MB, and are happy with the quality. Others, would rather have more, and double the size.

Looks to me as if an MKV movie @ 720p, ~ 4GB is the typical size.

The logical way to look at it is to realize that the 720p encode contains over
3x the amount of pixels as a typical Xvid movie...
