blu ray wifi/Windows Media player ?

Recently I purchased a Sony Blu ray player that connects to my home computer and can play video and audio files through Windows media player# 11.
The problem is the videos I have on my hardrive are not readable by windows media player. Different types of files. Not mpeg. Is there anyway to convert the files on the harddrive to have the media player be able to add to it's library so I can watch them in my living room using the Sony?
