I rented this DVD from my local Blockbuster, and I can't get it to play properly. I only have access to a laptop and software players right now, so I can't test it in a normal DVD player.

It appears to start out ok, but the movie appears to play scenes in a random order. Bear in mind, I'm really not trying to copy the movie, just play it back.

I read a post in this thread G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Successful Backup where someone mentions structural copy protection and the DVD ending up out of sequence.

Does anyone know if the copy protection does indeed make the scenes play out of order?

The only way I know of the scenes being played out of order is on a dvd that was not ripped properly. You may want to go back to your local blockbuster and let them know what has happened, and that you may have gotten someone's copied disk, when they tried to do a "burn and run".

If it is a burned disc, they took the time to litescribe the title. It may be because I'm using a very outdated windows media player (although my MPC and VLC are more up to date, and they wouldn't play it either).

Either way, I ended up having to rip the disc to my harddrive with AnyDVD to get it to play.

Uhhhh, it's not polite to talk about "rent and burn's" here. We only give you advice on backing up dvd that you actually own.

The advice I gave you was to actually let them know, as they should have no problem giving you another copy. As I haven't seen how the disk face looks, litescribe just etches the image onto the disk face, and it is easy to make one look like the original.

I deleted it. I just wanted to watch it before I had to return it. I only had until Thursday night to take it back.

I imagine it would work on a "true" standalone DVD player.
