hi,

i dont remember what programs that i would use to convert videos from mkv to avi, to play in my dvd player. im used to using my mac to do video converting, but my mac is out for repairs.

AviDemux or the free version of Any Video Recorder should work.

Well, a lot of encoding tools will be found on Google. But I have to say none of them is perfect. I have used many such tools, including the demo and the registered versions. I just kept a few of them on my computer now.

I just notice a new brand these days, Ideal Video Converter. I think if yhou just want to convert MKV files to others, this one will be OK, although some other formats, such as Real and TS, can not be decoded very well.
