I've been downloading movies to my puter, then converting to dvd to watch on tv. Now, with hard drive storage so cheap, it seems it would be cheaper to buy a hard drive for storage and watch movies from there. How can this be done?

you need to get a hdmediaplayer , you can find some that play all the media files and even have HDMI output. Most have remote controls.
You can find some in the 50.00 range (for the enclosure only), you supply your own drive.
