Hi there, I know very little about backing up already purchased dvds that I own, so my father rips them for me, however when I try to play them on my dvd player at home sometime during the movie it will either start skipping and freeze up or pixel out and stop playing. I would like to buy my father the best dvd ripper out there, but I dont even know where to begin to do the reserch to find him one. any advice out there? He already uses some of the free ware thats out there. Thanks.

Before doing that, make sure he is using a consistently reliable DVD blank.
Look for Verbatim brand disks that have 'AZO' somewhere on the package (do not buy the Verbatim 'Life Series').

The problem you are describing sounds more like a media problem to me.

Dust can interfer with the laser's ability to successfully burn a DVD. Under a good light look for dark spots in the dye. If these unburned areas are large enough they can interfer with the error correction system built into the DVD format.

Good Proceedure;

1. Good Quality Media (the Ones ATTAR Suggested) Try For 8x -R
2. Burn at 1/2 the rated Speed of your Blank Media
3. Burn with Imgburn
4. Set Target Area To 4300
5. Do Not Multi-Task While Burning
6. Do Not Surf the Net While Burning
7. Clean the Laser in Your Stand alone DVD Player

Freeware is fine for Ripping. DVDFAB is what I Use

21 day Free Trial For Full Funtion, after that the Free Options Kick In.
