getting short video clips out of longer movies

I need to get some footage out of long movies for a presentation I'm doing.
Right now I have some dvd and some xvid footage that I want to get into After Effects. But the avi itself is an hour 37 minutes and I only need about 20 seconds in a format that plays well with after effects..
Just wonder what a good way of doing this would be.. re-encode only a selected part of a xvid video? let me know if you have any ideas!

You can use a screen capture program to record what you see on the screen and stop the recording at the exact moment you like. I know of WMCapture, which is not free, but there are others.

could definitely try that.. I feel as though there must be a more straightforward way.. but I could be wrong. that would at least get the part I need out, but I'd prefer using the video source directly to be sure it's the right speed and size etc

Does After Effects support AVI? If so, then you can use Avidemux to cut the part that you need from your AVI, without re-encoding.

If you want to re-encode to a different format, you can use Any Video Converter to cut out the needed part:
