Recording Screen Produces No Video

Whenever I attempt to use a program (such as Koyote or CamStudio) to record my computer screen, the video is always completely black. I've noticed that for one program the information box that popped up out of my toolbar was recorded without a problem, but the video (which is an mkv) wasn't, although this problem also occurred with an avi and a wmv file. This occurs no matter what settings I choose while recording the video. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
