My girlfriend was recording YouTube videos of herself playing a musical instrument (a flute) using an AMD 1500+ with 1GB RAM, a Creative Webcam Pro and a Creative analog mic. Her software of choice is Nero Vision 5 and Windows XP Pro. This worked okay but she wants better because her webcam doesn't pick up the colors very well. She tried a couple of other webcams (a Logitech C500 and a Microsoft VX-3000) but Nero wouldn't let her pick her Creative mic and insisted on using the mic built into the camera. That sounded okay, but she likes to put the mic where it needs to be., and that's not typically on top of her monitor. She ended up returning the new cameras.

She has since replaced her aging desktop with a new laptop. New computer should mean better ability to record, right? Her laptop has an i7-620m with 8GB Ram running Windows 7 Premium x64. It has a built in webcam and mic, but again she can't use them because she can't place them where she wants. So, she's got a Phillips webcam and her old Creative mic working, but the sound from the mic has some hissing and the Phillips webcam is just crap. A CPU of that calibre should not have any lag while viewing a camera. I should mention that the laptop uses Realtek audio drivers for the mic input. I've tweaked the settings to try to eliminate the hiss but it's either hiss during quiet parts or crackling during loud parts (as the volume overdrives way past the red)

I was going to suggest she upgrade the camera to a Microsoft VX-5500 ($89 CAD) and get a BlueMic Snowflake Portable USB Microphone ($69 CAD) to replace the Creative analog one. Would this combination eliminate the hissing noise in recordings and would she have smooth 30fps video from the camera? Will Nero Vision 5 allow her to pick a different mic or will it insist on using the one built into the webcam? Is there better equipment she could get? She's on a budget so can't get a $300 mic or anything like that.

Any feedback or comments would be greatly appreciated. She really wants to get her new system recording again soon.
