Youtube re-encoding .mp4 Questions: Best practice?

Youtube offers the option to download their videos as .mp4 container variation of .avi

The video default download size is 480x360.

They look great in default size, but when blown up to full size, they obviously get pixelated.

I've been trying to use asharp and mplayer denoise filters in avidemux to try and get the video to clean up a little.

I'm not having any luck.

Does anybody have any good ideas like software and filters to use. Or is this a lost cause?

Please provide a link to a representative youtube video
and I'll take a look.

Are you trying to enlarge during the re-encode,
or are you keeping them at 480*360 ?

It looks great if you leave it regular size. If you expand Klite media player or vlc media player to full size, you'll see it gets grainy and pixelated.

My objective is to try and keep it relatively close to the quality of the original size after re-encoding.

It's just that all the filters I've used don't make it any better.

No I am not trying to enlarge on re-encode. I figured that would really destroy the video.

I don't think there is much you can do,
the original is juddery (many duplicate frames)
and is low bitrate to begin with.

I opened it in Virtualdub and applied the warp sharp filter.
Not sure if it looks "better" but it looks different.
Perhaps you can play with it a bit.

I've been messing around all day with this.

I've converted a few .mp4s to .wmv with no change on framerate, resolution and size.

I then add them to moviemaker. I add the "whiten2" effect to the movie board then add the "speed up 5" effect to the entire sequence of clips.

It seems to have fixed the quality a little bit so far.

How do you use the warp sharp filter in vdubmod? I looked for that filter on the vdubmod site. There isn't any. All I found is an avisynth filter for that. I don't know how to use avisynth though.

Not vdubmod (which hasn't been updated in three years)
but virtualdub itself (on which vdubmod is based).

The filter is built-in, Avisynth not required.

You may need to download and use the directshow input plugin .
to allow you to open the mp4.
