ZV427MG9 Magnavox DVD No Sound

I have hooked up the ZV427MG9 Magnavox per the manual and even talked with their tech help yet I cannot receive sound on the video channel. I have sound and picture on my HDMI channel, so no problem there, and when I replay DVDs or VHS tapes, again, no problem. But I cannot copy TV shows with sound. What can I do? I don;t want to return the unit because Im not convinced its the units problem.
