AVI files won't play on DVD

Hi, I have read the other threads on this topic and understand only a little bit of what is being said (I am very much an amature at this). So my question is this, what is the best way to play these files on DVD, which play perfectly on the computer (I use VLC). I have tried the USB and only some files will play. Any advice as to what to use? Many thanks (hope I have posted this in the correct forum room)

You have a player that can play xvid/Divx ?
Use something like IMGBURN, and burn the files as data.
