I have decided I would like to encode my movie collection to avi, MP4, DivX or what ever. My question is what is the best format to use? I want to keep 100% resolution, subtitles, chapters, and the surround sound. I am not too concerned about the file size as of yet. I just want the best quality I can get in a single file. What is the best software free or otherwise to use? I am a stickler for quality and my dvd's are just taking up too much space. I have a new home built i7 920 desktop with 6 gigs of ram. I am currently running XP 32-bit but will be dual booting Windows 7 sometime in the near future.

I appreciate all input.

Give Handbrake a try. x264 (avc) in mp4 or mkv container.
