I'm trying to convert a dvd into an avi/divx/mkv file. I've used a lot of dif programs and i've read through many threads on this forum, however the output quality is not very great and you can see boxes. i'm looking for any method to produce the avi/divx/mkv, doesn't matter how long the process takes, and my size constraint is 2 gb. the smaller the size the better of course, but 2gb is my limit. i want as close to dvd quality as possible. any ideas or methods? I've tried AoA DVD Ripper, MeGUI, DVDFab, Xilisoft, Aimersoft, Fairuse Wizard, and AutoGK. Of these, DVDFab, Fairuse, and Aimersoft were the best, however the outputs still had boxes.

Any method would help. Thanks!

The best quality I ever got was from dr.divx using 2-pass mode. The output is near dvd quality. Dr.divx 2.0 is free, the divx codec is available in the klite codec pack. Once in a while I ran into video/audio sync problems with dr.divx. But I haven't found any other software that has produce better quality.

Currently I use fairuse wizard with the h264 codec and get good results. Not as good as dr.divx but close enough. Never got boxes (artifacts) with fairuse. You get the artifacts when you use the 1-pass method and your using a low bitrate. I stick to 900 kps on all my encodes.

I use around 1400 kps never below 1000 though, and always 2 pass, still get the artifacts. would it be because I'm watching the file on my computer? if i watch it on my tv, would it look right? haven't tried dr. divx, will try it now. I thought they stopped work on dr divx? so didn't bother trying it.
