I'm trying to convert a dvd into an avi/divx/mkv file. I've used a lot of dif programs and i've read through many threads on this forum, however the output quality is not very great and you can see boxes. i'm looking for any method to produce the avi/divx/mkv, doesn't matter how long the process takes, and my size constraint is 2 gb. the smaller the size the better of course, but 2gb is my limit. i want as close to dvd quality as possible. any ideas or methods? I've tried AoA DVD Ripper, MeGUI, DVDFab, Xilisoft, Aimersoft, Fairuse Wizard, and AutoGK. Of these, DVDFab, Fairuse, and Aimersoft were the best, however the outputs still had boxes.

Any method would help. Thanks!

Are these boxes evident when the output files (not the disk) are played back on the PC - or is it when the disk is played.

If the new AVI output files play ok on the PC before being burned to the disk, the problem may be in the burning stage - poor media will often accept a burn without complaint, yet will exhibit, pixelizing, break-up and freezing on a standalone player.

AutoGK will turn out a very good, custom sized 2GB AVI file from a two hour movie DVD.

If the files play ok on the PC, use ImgBurn to burn the files to the disk.
If you use a known-to-be-consistently-reliable brand, like 'Verbatim', burned at a moderate speed, you should have a playable disk.

problem is i get the artifacts showing on my computer, before I even burn the file to disc...
is it just that my resolution on my computer is too high? and the file will actually look better once i play it on the tv?

my desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050

From your description of 'boxes' - I doubt it.
In AutoGK, are you selecting the target 2GB size (which is the maximum size that a standalone player will accept).
This should give the maximum possible quality - the only other option is to use the 'Quality' setting - the problem is that you cannot control the size, thus it may be unusable on a standalone player.

I don't know why so many programs are giving such poor results - try the VideoHelp Forum, they are pretty good when it comes to this.
