How to convert xvid to play in a dvd player?

Family member gave us some videos at Christmas but they are in xvid format. What needs to be done to get them to play on a dvd player? I have tried Any Video Converter but my dvd player would not play the format ir converted it to, mpeg? Prefer some free software as I probably won't use it much after these few videos.

You can use DVD Flick, will convert to the format you need.
