I'm at my wits end. Most mpegs play on my computer fine, but those that have pcm audio emit a loud static. Video plays fine. Here's background:
On my old rig (athlon 3500, 1gb ram, win xp pro 32 bit) these same files played fine. I don't remember which codecs, players, etc. I had been using on that system because they had been installed for years. I recently upgraded everything. Asus p6t mobo, Core i7 920 processor, 6gb ram, win vista 64 bit. Now I can't get these mpegs with pcm audio to play. I have tried many things: the k-lite codecpack, ffdshow, vlc media player, windvd 8 and 9, and I have no idea what to do next. Any ideas?
When I use Media Player Classic (included with klite codecpack) it behaves as if there is no audio track at all--no volume, all audio options grayed out. When played with VLC, I get clear video, but loud static through the speakers. These are multiple mpeg files, all with pcm audio streams apparently, and they all play fine (audio and video) when streamed to my PS3. I just can't play them on my PC, which is what i'm trying to fix. Here is a screenshot of one of the files when viewed in graphedit:
But, here are the codec properties as displayed by VLC media player for the same file:
Y'know.. that sounds like a fault with the fista sound driver rather than anything wrong with the players or the files... 64bit drivers for fista are poor to say the least.. and some are downright shoddy. I would investigate a few generic hardware drivers.. perhaps even trying the 32 bit ones.
