Cannot Play Discs Recorded on Stand Alone Recorders

I have two DVD players and neither of them will reliably play discs that have been recorded with stand alone DVD recorders. By this, I mean that some discs will play with no problem while others will never play. Evidently, it depends upon the individual recorder (none of these were recorded by me, so they come from divergent sources).

I've tried to reauthor these discs, and it does not help. It seems like the DVD player sees the menu as part of the main movie. Has anyone had a similar issue, or found a way to reburn the discs to funtion properly?
