cant see 3d mkv half sbs on 3d tv

I purchased a toshiba wx800u 3d led tv. I hooked up my acer laptop (4736z via HDMI and tried playing a MKV Half SBS 3d movie that I had on it via VLC media player as NVIDIA 3d vision software and all I can see on the screen is the two half screen images. When I watch DTV the 3d works fine but it's not working through the mkv file. I have tried playing with the setting from SBS to top to bottom and nothing. Any help would be appreciated. Do i need a 3d video card to play it on my laptop? I don't think i do. Help me out please.
