Hi there:

I have a video clip (.avi) that is 16x9 but plays back squished into a 4x3 view (everyone is too tall and skinny). Is there any free software that will stretch this back out to the original 16x9?

Thanks

Keith

Thanks. Tried that but it didn't change anything. The new video still plays as 4x3. Here is the info from the program about the file:

Packed bitstream: No
QPel: No
GMC: No
Interlaced: No
Aspect ratio: Square pixels
Quant type: H.263
FourCC: DX50
User data: DivX503b830

I-VOPs: 1885 (0.97%)
P-VOPs: 192947 (99.03%)
B-VOPs: 0 (0.00%)
S-VOPs: 0 (0.00%)
N-VOPs: 0 (0.00%)

Any ideas?

I use W7 and have never got WMP to honour the display aspect ratio or to be able to change the screen AR using the options..
I think as scorpNZ indicates, you use a decent media player like VLC or MPC or re-encode the file using the likes of VirtualDub.

So VLC lets you edit video as well as play it? Maybe I'll give that a try.

Thanks

Open the video.
RC on the screen and select the desired AR.
If you have changed the the AR using MP4Modifier, VLC will detect it automatically.

Does it actually convert the aspect ratio of the source file or just the playback aspect ratio that's displayed on the display (and leave the source file with the original, incorrect, aspect ratio)?

Ah, OK. What about free file editing programs that will change the aspect ratio of the file? Any out there?

To correct a file that has been incorrectly encoded with the wrong AR, you can use VirtualDub.
Assume 16:9 encoded as 4:3.
If the source file is XviD and you wish the new file to be XviD, you also have to ensure that the XviD codec is installed.
Load/drag the video into VDub and select the resize filter (Video > Filters).
Reset the AR then select the codec for the output (Video > Compressor > XviD).
Save the file.
