recently tried to play copied dvd on dvd player some would not play with bad type error but they all played ok on my pc and laptop.
Did the usual change of media even bought a new dvd burner and different software but still same problem then i looked at the volume label of my copies that played and those that did not i noticed any that had the underscore character or numbers in did not play in the dvd player
when doing a strait copy it takes on the label of the original
So as a test case i tried reburning a copy again as before and tried it and it was not playable in the dvd player as before
Then i did a copy of the copy which did not play in the dvd player i changed the save folder to a single name similar but not the one suggested by the dvd volume and i stopped the process after the vob files had been created on the hard drive
I then started nero and burnt the vob files as before but this time in nero before burning i set the volume label of this blank dvd as NEW the nero default
and like magic this next copy worked in all the 3 dvd players we have
and the pc ok
so it seems dvd players are fussy about the volume label they read at start up
so dont go changing media and the like before trying setting the volume label to a single name the other working dvds were on the same media but had single names as their volume labels
its worked for me
so this dispells all the rumours of bad media and burner problems and software problems as i tried them all and still had the same problem that problem has gone now i have just single name volume labels on the dvd i could experiment more but if it works leave it alone i say
So check the volume label of your dvd that dont play on the dvd player but are ok on a pc to see if what i say is correct
post a reply if it works for you too

Is it definitely the underscore or numbers that cause the problem?
Nero has a history of problems with volume labels over 16 characters and A-Z, 0-9, . and _ are standard characters.

the volume labels that did not run had underscore characters between the label names and the other one was a mixture of characters and numbers i reburnt these from these bad copies only this time with a single volume name and they both now work in all 3 differnt dvd players and on my pc
so it seems something happens in the dvd players or in nero when these are used
maybe nero inserts some hidden chrs that the dvd player cant read
ive always used dvd shrink and dvd deycrpter and nero this problem has only just started to happen with latest dvd
and all i could find different were the label names on good and bad copies as if you let the software do the burning automaticaly it takes on the original label name
maybe this is some inbuilt anti copy system who knows but i know this fixed it for me

Did the bad names have more than 16 characters in them?

no they did not but one was volume label P9260S
the other was 11 chrs long in capitals with an underscore and the number 3 in the volume label
all the others that worked i burnt as volume label NEW or a normal name
its strange why this should be the case but it definatly works to solve my problem i was having
it may be something to do with nero and the way it handles volume label chrs that would explain why its a bit hit and miss with the success rate with people burning copies
it certainly had me confused thats why i went and changed burner and media after reading the forums and still had the problem
even wondered if i was using the correct burn method but the working ones ruled that out
One thing i did not do is a copy of the bad disk and renter the original volume label as i do the burn and see if that makes a difference may try that when ive more time
only after comparing the working and non working ones did i find that the volume label style seemed to be different so gave that a try and was successful even using the bad disk to copy from
so that ruled out a bad burn
maybe someone else who knows the program better will know the answer
this may cure other people with the same problem or maybe its just my setup gone loopy who knows

Thanks for the info.
It sounds like Nero has found another way to trip up the user.

hi finally cracked the problem
using VSO inspector i looked at the sectors on the dvd and when comparing a good copy with a bad one I found that at sector 16 is stored the dvd label and this is as it is for both good and bad but then at sector page 32 on a good disk it is the same again but on the bad disks every chr is padded with a decimal point hex 00 and again at sector page 33 and so on so nero or the something is putting in hex 00 between each character in the label name
so on a good disk it reads BAD BOYS
on a bad disk it reads B.A.D B.O.Y.S
so thats the reason for them not playing on a dvd player but ok on a pc
why this is i dont know yet
going back many years i had a problem like that once before when changing up to dos 6 and using an eprom programmer program and that went wrong as spaces were padded out by .full stops in dos 6 that couldnt be read by the programmer so i had to apply a fix
maybe this is some new simple but efective copy protection or just a glitch with nero
regards
