Win 7
XFX HD4870 with 9.12 drivers
Monitor 1 = Emachines E211H
Monitor 2 = Viewsonic VX922

When watching video from any source (DVD, xVid, watching TV tuner), I am noticing ghosted vertical bars...especially when the background is dark. Here are some things to note:

-The problem occurs on either of my two monitors.
-I've tried multiple video cables
-There are no vertical bars when not watching video...the bars only appear within the video's window.

As seen in the picture below, you can pause the video and the vertical bars remain to be seen.

I don't remember this happening with my previous video card, an x1950xt. Do you think the problem is related to the card?...a driver?

Here is a picture that I took of the screen while a DVD movie was paused. The pic is very bright because I left the camera shutter open so that you can clearly see what I am talking about:

I discovered today that the problem only occurs when using Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center. I installed VLC Player and it works perfectly...no vertical bars at all.

Why do you think the Microsoft programs are causing this problem?

It's to stop you watching anything you might want to rip ;) .. wmp is bad spyware anyhow so you are well rid of it.

Actually joking aside.. it looks very much like there is a conflict between the resolution of your monitor and the players output.

wmp12 has these bars only really noticeable when playing dvds or dvd files and its only truly visible when theres a darker scene. while wmpc, wmpchcx64 makes the outlines look like small unoticable equal signs. the bars don't appear while plaing other video files but i know the output quality could be better this is the only resource on the web the has this pic, thank you, i feel like i am not alone! i downloaded and am using vlc and this is the better of wmpc, wmp12 but it still isn't playing at its full potential. i have codecs proper, sharks007x64 which includes ffdshow. i have the latest video drivers available. nothing i mean nothing i am doing seems to really work. i play all of my games at highest settings with no problem. its only related to video play back. SORRY ABOUT THE LONG POST , IFEEL THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE HAS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD ON MY PROBLEM.

Win 7 x64 full
hd 4890 cf----->HAVE TRIED DISABLING CF... NO AVAIL

addressing the bars in wmp12, if i look closely the bars look interconnected like small flat two spot length lego bricks attached like a wall?

Lots of people are experiencing big problems with wmp recently.. I wouldn't use it if they paid me to have it honest!

I still think it's related to the player output resolution vs the monitor capabilities.. Try tweaking the resolution.. say 800x600 for starters as dvd video isn't that high anyway (720x576)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Scum101, I have tried a full range of different resolutions and refresh rates (on both monitors that I noted in the original post), but WMP still exhibits the vertical bar problem. However, VLC Player continues to play perfectly...regardless of the screen resolution.

If I had an nVidia card available to try, I would. I'm curious if there is some kind of issue between the ATI cards and WMP / WMC.

I have fixed the bars in wmp12. You need to go into CCC, catalyst control center for ATI cards. please say you have this installed. under the avivio video tab, look for the all settings tab. uncheck enable dynamic contrast box. this fixed the vertical bars in wmp12 that have been haunting me for sooo long. windows media player classic still looks slightly blocky to me on fullscreen. the outlines of objects/people are not crisp. this was how it was prior to messing with ccc. how do i post images?

2 for 1 heres another thing i uncovered after last post. sometimes it just takes the right words in an internet query to get the right place at the right time. if i never saw the first post on this topic, the steps would have possibly never happened. sorry about all the lower case typing, i'm lazy when it comes to typing. http://wiki.digital-digest.com/index.php..._Hints_and_Tips

Nice going baboneya! Your solution worked for me too and I never would have found it on my own.
