Hi there, I'm new to this forum but it seems veyr helpful to most so maybe someone can help me.
I've video files I record off my own gopro HD sports camera, mp4 set to 720p @ 60fps. I've followed the guide on this forum where I've downloaded ffdshow and the Haali media splitter as it says, and then I've been using MPC (media player classic).
The video plays, but at what seems to be halfspeed and even then a little stuttery. I've turned on the statistics view and even within only about 5 seconds of video it says there's nearly 300 frames dropped.. i'm no expert.. but 60fps.. in 5 seconds.. i'd say that's nearly every frame!
The video does play though, just not very smoothly. Can anyone help? Maybe there's something I need to adjust on MPC.
Hardware btw, in case it's required: Intel Core 2 duo T5550, 1.83 GHz, 2GB DDR2, 1024mb ATI mobility radeon graphics, Windows Vista home.
Ok.. I've already made progress. I previously noticed my CPU usage was super high and hitting 100% very easily when trying to play videos. I've since updated my display drivers, defragged and cleaned up the computer a bit and switched off some background programs. This seems to have worked partially.
Now the video runs smoothly for a minute or so with only a very small number of frames being dropped. After about a minute it starts dropping more frames.
From all this, I'm guessing best results will be had by simply lowering CPU usage as much as possible.
Anyone know how to lower CPU usage effectively? Maybe a different codec would work slightly better?
For MP4, if it is really a CPU-bound issue, K-lite - or any other free (legally free) codec pack - isn't going to help. Besides, FFDShow's MP4 decoder is as fast as K-lite (considering they're the same thing.) There is at least one *pay* codec that will improve your playback, again if it is truly a CPU issue, and that is CoreAVC.
That said, I believe your problem is MPC. It won't play 60 fps. Try VLC first and see how that works for you. I have the same problem using an i7; playing 720p or 1080p @ 60 fps it will drop exactly half the frames, just enough to hit 30 fps. VLC plays it at full, smooth 60 fps even on my 3 Ghz Core2Duo laptop.
Actually, I've managed to now find online, tips on reducing processor load by simplifying some of the vista bits and pieces (sidebar, effects, transparency etc) and it now works pretty well!!
I'm now using MPC with the k-lite codec pack, and so long as I make sure the computer is barely doing anything else at all, then the video, at 60fps and 720p plays fantastically!!
