Need help with wdtv and external hdd

I have a wdtv player and an adata 2.5" external harddrive full of mkv files. I'm having problems playing some of the movies, they are studdering when playing, but some of them play fine.I dont know why this is happening. The harddrive operates on usb only so is it possible that its underpowered? Will buying a usb y-cable solve this issue?
All the files play perfectly on my notebook so I know its not the actual mkv files.
Also do any of you know what voltage the usb post on the wtdv operates at? Maybe its just under 5v and its enough to underpower the hdd?
Any help would be awesome thanks
