No sound, jerky images in Adobe Premier LE

Hi,
I've just purchased Adobe premier LE but when I capture from my Canon XL1 the image in the timeline is very jerky and there's no sound - advce desperately needed as I have to edit wedding footage!
I'm using Windows XP
