Sudden issue playing 720p x264 .MKV videos

Hi,
CCCP codec pack installed and had no issues playing video. All of a sudden over the past few days it has been impossible for me to playback any x264 720p .MKV videos.
VLC , WMP , MLC HC, Gom video player
codec pack. I have uninstalled the codec pack and reinstalled it, I have been slaving over this issue for hours and I cannot for the life of me get it to work. What do you recommend I try? I have scanned my computer for viruses and other malware with no hits.
