AVI to DVD works on some but not all players. Why?

I'm having trouble getting my burns to play on one specific player. I have successfully made DVD backups via DVD Fab, DVD Shrink, and ImgBurn that will play in our Honda Odyssey's DVD player. I recently tried converting an AVI file to DVD using DVD Flick and ImgBurn, but the DVD will not play in the van. This same DVD will play in our stand alone DVD players inside the house.
Any idea as to what I may be doing wrong? Although I'm a veteran at making DVD backups, I would be classified as a newbie with converting AVI to DVD so I may just be missing something. I still don't understand why it would work in stand alone players but not the van's DVD player.

Some players have issues with certain types of media.
Often, changing brands to one of the best (sony, verbatim, TY, etc,etc)
may help. Some players prefer dvd-r over dvd+r, and vice-versa.
If you can't get any dvd's to work, try dvd-rw.

Are you using the -R's or the +R's?
If using the plus +R's make sure to booktype them to DVD-ROM to enhance compatibility.

The ones I was able to make work (backing up DVDs) were DVD +R (I think they were memorex but don't qote me on the brand). I know the ones that will NOT work are Verbatim (sp) -R.
Is it typical to find a drive that will play +R but not -R. I bought the Verbatim -R, because I had studied and decided this was one of the best options for universal success and quality.

So much for that theory. I checked the older DVDs last night that will work in the van and they are also verbatim -R discs. They are several years older and have blue writing whereas the new ones I purchased that will not work are translucent writing.
So, it doesn't look like the media is my issue unless verbatim has changed something other than the appearance of there discs. Any ideas as to why the AVI conversion will not play in the van whereas a DVD rip/backup will and yet they both play in a stand alone DVD inside the house.

VOLmatic..im a bit like you buddy,a veteran in burning dvd's but a newbie to converting AVI files and transfering them onto a dvd.I cant get my movies to transfer onto a disc using shrink or dvd fab, but i can convert AVI to DVD.But i have stumbled across being able to burn the movies onto to disc by using WinAVI converter and burn with the inbuilt burner in WinAVI.Try that and see how you go,hope you have better luck than me,trying to use shrink and dvdfab.The problem i have is a setting somewhere i cant put my finger on.Shrink will allow me to convert onto disc but the disc is "incompatable" and wont play in any dvd player but will allow me to play on windows.Anyway best of luck....cheers to ya...

Are you sure it's not a PAL / NTSC issue ?
Some USA players may not play PAL, for example.

No m8 its not the PAL or NTSC issue,i know that for sure.Its something simple and silly i cant put my finger on with the settings.When i burn the movie with WinAVI it plays well,but "disc not compatable" with shrink or dvd fab5.Oh well the problem is keeping my brain active and giving me something to do trying to sort it......Cheers

How about creating the video_ts folder on the HDD and burning
with IMGBURN?
Another thing to try, drag one of the main VOBs from a working and non-
working DVD into mediainfo.
Examine them for differences.

Rather than looking at the writing, check the disc ID in ImgBurn of your Verbs. They can be made in different plants.

I've done the ImgBurn, but I still have the problem. What's weird for me is that the DVDs will play in our stand alone DVD players but not the DVD player in the van.
How do you compare the verbs with ImgBurn?

Put in the blank disc.
Start IMGBurn and in the window (top right) there is information about DVD Burner and media. Look at the Manufacturer ID: to find out if they are legit or fake media.
You can then go HERE and look up the Manufacturer ID: in the list to find out the quality of the media.
If the disc works in your standalone player and not in the portable player then more then likely it is a media issue. Portable players can be very picky.

Thanks Larry. BTW, it's not a portable DVD player in our van. It's a factory installed DVD player in a 2004 Honda Odyssey. Are these players typically picky similar to portable players?

Latest update: I used Larry's suggestion to determine the DVD Manufacturer ID, and it revealed interesting note, but not what you would expect. I have two different ID's which have been successful. Both of these are older bought blanks and "2nd class media" according to the link Larry provided. The two different ID's I've tried with no success are newer bought blanks. One of these is a "second class" and one is a "first class." I still have a DVD folder set of one of my successful DVD copies, and I tried burning this onto one of the unsuccessful ID's. It did not work on this, so it does appear to be a media issue. Here's are my results if anyone is interested:
Verbatim 16X DVD-R - MCC 03RG20 - Does NOT work in Odyessy
Verbatim Datalife DVD-R - RITEKG03 - Works in all Players.
Memorex 16X DVD-R - CMC MAG. AM3 - Does NOT work in Odyessy
Memorex 4X DVD+R - RICOHJPN-R01-02 - Works in all Players
Now that we got through all the hair pulling "research," I'll get to my next question. My successful burns are all on older bought blanks which I can't seem to locate a source for buying more. With that said, how can I go about selecting a media that should work with our Odyessey knowing the above results and not being able to locate the two ID's which worked?

It appears it could also be that you are burning your discs faster than previously due to having a faster burner and/or faster media. Burning your discs faster can lead to problems with older or poor quality lasers, or the drives simply haven't been made powerful enough to read recordable media. Remember, self-made discs are burned onto a chemical layer on the disc, this is harder to read back than the pressed aluminum layer seen on commercial discs.
I'm a Windows user, but prefer Linux. I've thought it through thoroughly and its not as thoughtless as one would think.
