Converting PAL DVD to NTSC DVD.

I am using TMPGEnc Xpress to convert a PAL DVD into a NTSC DVD.

The source DVD has a file structure comprising various IFO, BUP and VOB files. This structure enables the provision of on-screen menus, hence the ability to select between various parts of the DVD.

TMPGEnc Xpress performs a first class conversion to NTSC. But its output comprises simply five MPEG files.

I can burn these files to a DVD and play it (in NTSC). But all the original structure is lost. There are no menus, and no ability to select various parts of the DVD. The output MPEG files simply comprise all the recorded material in sequence.

MY QUESTION IS: How may I convert a PAL DVD to its NTSC equivalent while maintaining the original DVD structure including menus ?

It's the menu that gives the problem and I've never yet seen it done well.

Or the voodoo method.
I've actually done this.
I have a Panasonic player that won't touch it and A Toshiba that does (but the buttons on the menu are slightly out when trying to click on them).

You can convert but there is no easy way to maintain original DVD structure. The simplest way is to recreate the menus on your own. ConvertXtoDVD can convert and recreate the menus you want. The guide mentioned is just too complicated.

The patch method is not a true conversion. It's a dirty hack that is a hit-a-miss depending on how flexible your dvd player is.

why aren't the files being run thru dvdfab first,under settings it can be made region free same goes for anydvd (burn to rw dvd then re rip)& most probably clonedvd

My question appears to have raised fundamental issues of difficulty at this point in time. It seems to have addressed a fundamental need and presents an opportunity for somebody clever enough to create a new application to do the job well.

TO attar: Thank you for drawing attention to the "Patch Method" and to Doctor UberGuide's opus magnum.

TO toaddub: I will take a look at "ConvertXtoDVD".

TO scorpNZ: I didn't mention this, but I first ran the source DVD through "DVD Decrypter" to remove the region code and also copy protection. (That was the easy part).

Whatever further action I may take, if any, I am inclined to stay with TMPGEnc Xpress. This is because the technical quality of the converted video is paramount. But I regard the issue of DVD conversion (PAL/NTSC) as important because it concerns good communication around the world.
