hey all,
now im not that much of a noob but i dont know what is really the best program out there to rip dvd's with?
now my boss has come to me and asked if i can rip his 100 or so dvd's to a hard drive and keep them there so he doesnt have all the covers everywhere. i can do this which is fine. but what i want to know is which program will allow me to convert or maybe even just be backed up into a format that he can watch staright away like a dvd to .avi file in one swift back up if you know what i mean.
another thing i have a lot of movies on my hard drive at the moment, now these are movies that i have downloaded online do you think i will be able to play them through surround sound or does no one rip the dvd's like that??? cause then i wont have to back up as many of his dvd's i can just give them to him from mine.
thanks heaps guys appreciate any answers i get.
much love

Mrguss get off the crack, movies not an hdd not a smart idea you reckon, what makes dvd any bloody different *rolls eyes*
@ moshepac
The audio in your AVI's will depend whether the dvd had 5:1 as a selection along with AC3 & whether 5:1 was selected to be included in the AVI or not,to save time just give him the ones that are already converted the sound is usually ok
The next issue is how large a hdd he has & how much time you want to spend converting hdd's to avi.
On a 2.0GHz cpu with 1gb memory will take anywhere between 2-6 hrs for each dvd & that's using dvdfab platinum, dvdfab free doesn't allow converting to avi unless you buy gold or platinum versions if memory serves,100 dvds sure is a lot to be converting, the quickest way would be to rip the dvd's to the hdd & leave them that way, xbmc for windows could then be installed on his comp which imo would be the best media player to handle the library, you'd have to see a working setup of a comp or an early xbox to see why i say xbmc, anyway media player classic or vlc can be used as ther're free as well
Yeah anyway that's my thoughts on it

well as for space he doesnt care about that he said he has a 1TB hdd at home unused so there is more than enough room for the dvd's i guess.
so this program xbmc is it similar to windows media or something only because i can rip the dvd's to my hard drive and keep them in a folder but they will have both the audio and video folder like a normal dvd file, but my question is can this program play these files like any other media prgram? create lists or stuff like that?
i know this will take me a while and i already told him that it would take long and he doesnt mind so neither do i then
thanks heaps for all of your input, im going to check think about which route i want to take with this

XBMC would best for your own viewing although easy to install on the comp it takes a little bit of time to get it set up the way you'd like,i quite like the curtain raiser before selecting the movie.loo..,for your boss he can use either
k-lite full
vlc
ffdshow
XBMC is not like windows XP media centre as it's not a full OS,although it can connect to the net to get skins & media tags etc, best to just install it & go from there, for testing pruposes use the "windowed option" instead of full screen once xbmc is installed
It does more than create lists, you can get it to show thumbnails of the dvd cover or the dvd itself if you have the jpg,it also can be like looking at a dvd case with it's sleeve however i'm not just talking about how you'd see it in explorer as static icons even tho that view is available, the sideways scrolling is real freaky, think of it like a shelf full of dvd's & you flick thru them either one at a time left or right or while having others in view also etc

To get more skins using it load the 360 skin & scroll to the very left or just use IE & download & drop n' drag em to the appropriate folder
