So I just downloaded a tv documentary off of a torrent site and I want to burn onto a DVD for my father.

When I was downloading it through Bitcomet it showed as one file, the usual file size of a movie. However, on completion when I went to burn the movie, instead of being one file it was separated into like 15 smaller files! I checked the properties of each file because it didn't look like a regular movie file.

Sure enough, each file reads: "R01 file" - what is this? It said on the torrent site it was an actual movie!

Usually that format means it is compressed. You need a program like winrar to open those files. Many times they are labeled in sucession such as R01, R02, R03 etc. The winrar or unzip program take all those and build one file from all of them, usually an avi file.
If they are not compressed they could be just smaller pieces that need to be stitched together. HJSplit is what most use for this.
Hope I helped a little.

Where do I get this program from? Is it free?

Thanks - now here's my next ques:
The movie I downloaded is compressed in like 10 sections - how do I convert all these sections into one movie file?

winrar isn't free but has an evaluation period you can try out. Great program.
7-zip is good too, and free.
To join the parts together, right click on the file once winrar or the like is installed. there is an option to extract to.Choose this option on the first file of the group. Make sure all the file pieces are together and named simiarly, such as r01, ro2. it will start to extract, and go through all your compressed files, eventually joining them together.
Sometimes these two programs don't work, and hjsplit does the job. It's free too! http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/#win32
