I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong forum. I bought a new Dell Inspiron PC with Windows 7 and I am having problems watching and backing up my movies that are region free. I am getting this message: Unable to play this DVD because it does not match the region code of your disc player. You must insert a disc created for your region or change the region code of your disc player.

But it will only allow me to change the region up to 5 times on my computer. I have a
PLDS DVD+-RWDH-16AAS disc drive. Does anyone know why the drive won't let me watch region free movies and is there anything I can do to prevent my drive from locking? I'm not sure what the purpose is behind making the drive this way.
Thank you for your help.

Interesting and a little complicated. My computer said I needed to install an update (not sure if it was for my DVD drive or for Roxio) but now all the sudden it is playing my dvds. I found it questionable that I couldn't play my own movies on a brand new computer and to only be able to change the region 5 times is odd. But for now, it seems to be fine, unless I authorized it by mistake to change the region without my knowledge.
Thanks for the info.

It is a little complicated, with Vista and Windows 7, both the OS and
the drive itself (rpc 2 firmware) enforce the restriction.

However, if you load a region free firmware into your drive, you can use Anydvd or similar
to get a round the OS restrictions.

That is a lot of unnecessary restriction if you ask me. At any rate, I may look into investing in AnyDVD or a similar program as you suggested. Or just watch all my movies on an alternate DVD player which is sometimes less convenient.
Thanks again for your response.
