I've recently built a new computer and had high expectations but I've been very disappointed with the new dvd writer.
I bought a Liteon 24x DVD/CD writer, with a SATA interface.
When it starts there is always a couple of seconds delay (which often freezes the computer)like it's taking it's time to kick in.
I've just used CDBurnerXP to burn a 1.86 gig DVD speed x16 and it took 20 minutes and 55 seconds - that's got to be excessive?
I did have Nero 9, which I was equally unimpressed with, and it's got such a bad rep I decided to try some open source/freeware and see how that performed.
Is this right, do I need to lower my expectations, or have I done something wrong?

I had something similar with a new PC when I added an IDE hard drive as a data drive.
The existing setup was for SATA 1 and 2 to be used for a SATA HDD and a SATA burner.
I found the IDE drive was set for 'Multi word DMA 2' where before it was Ultra DMA.
Since the bios did not address it I ended up moving the SATA HDD and burner and from connectors 1 and 2 to 5 and 6.
My IDE drive now shows as Ultra DMA.

I've always had ide drives before, easy master, slave - master, master - slave. This is the first time i've used SATA, so I suppose it means I'm going to have to spend some time reading up and understanding them and I'll just have to deal with these crap speeds till I do.
Even with my old gear I've never had to wait 20 minutes for a DVD to burn!

All I did was move the cables that connected to the motherboard (not the power cables that are part of the power harness) to different SATA connectors.
I went into Hardware Manager and looked at the DVD drives, found the SATA burner and got the channel number.
Then I checked the channel and found the burner set as DMA 5
I would expect your burner to be the same or better - perhaps someone else will chime in to confirm.
I have another IDE DVD drive location Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0
So don't I have any SATA controllers installed? When I was installing the operating sytem, it asked for drivers and I don't have any on a floppy, even though I've still got the drive, I don't have any disks.
But I thought the mobo disc with drivers would install them...
