trouble moving programs from dvr to dvd-r

We have an hdtv, a digital cable box, a blue ray player (came with the tv), and now a dvd-r. On the dvr, when you call up a program it asks if you want to "Record to VCR". I'd like to record to the dvd, but if I have to do vcr first, then vcr -> dvd so be it. I thought we had things connected properly... it does appear to record onto the vcr, BUT, once it starts recording, I can't stop it! I can't pause the dvr, can't change channels, can't stop recording... nothing.

We have Cable into the box, then out of the box and into tv. We have the composit cables coming from cable box into the dvd-r; composit cables from bd player into tv; and we have an hdmi cable from dvd-r into tv.

We use the main remote to get the dvr set up on the program we want to record, then use the dvd-r remote to actually press "record".

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
