Just click on one of them in this very thread, or hover over one if you're scared. All it does is enable you to get the link to a specific post within a thread

No, Scummy Dear, it's not!
Thank God I'm not afraid to look stupid anymore. Old age does bring some benefits.
Creaky, when I hover over the message I get a Hand icon, but no information. When I click on it, it moves me to the bottom of the thread.
Through trial and error I have discovered if I right-click on the message, I am able to save the link address for later use. That's all I wanted to know. Thanks, Creaky, for trying to help. Next time I'll look harder.

(I'm using Firefox at the moment), i hover over the 'link to this message' link and the contents of the link are displayed in the normal place down the bottom left of the browser, (see here).

Gotcha! Now it makes perfect sense. Somehow I was thinking that clicking on it would actually do something and I couldn't figure out what.
I'm good now and I appreciate your help.
