Putting online feature into a game?

Hey, is it possible to put an online feature into a normal basic game.. like Andreas Online (SA-MP)? How did they do this?
Also is there a way you could edit a game installed on your computer?

thats the link to the game i was talking about...its basically just a patch download that puts an online feature into the files were you installed it..you still play off the normal game disc.
