Usually, the cheaper the dvd's, the lower the quality. Are you looking for DVD+R (single layer) or DVD+R DL (Double layer)?

Stay away from Memorex, their cheap price may sound attractive, but they are cheap for a reason. I don't know any "good" websites for buying blank DVD's, I usually just buy them through local stores; ie. futureshop, bestbuy, ect, but only when they are on sale though.

Verbatim (from Singapore) are one of the best, but are sometimes not always cheap. If I had to pick a "cheap" brand, maybe go with Maxell, I haven't had any problems with them.

Verbatim from Singapore are DVD+R DL discs. Verbatim from Taiwan are CMC production. Verbatim from India are Moser Bayer. Maxell from Japan are Taiyo Yuden, the only Japanese manufacturer left. Maxell from Taiwan are Ritek. Memorex are usually CMC or Ritek. All of these brands are A-grade production. The reason Memorex are less expensive ("cheaper") than the others is due to market shares in the 30% range in North America, not Europe, that allows huge volume purchases. That is the case for standard DVD+/-R. As for DVD+R DL, they buy the IS production from Ritek that is, by the nature of the manufacturing method, far less expensive than the 2P manufacturing method that Verbatim uses for DVD+R DL discs.

The cheapest discs on the market are often brands that few people recognize. They tend to be B-grade stock that some factories dump. In those cases the cheap=low quality rule applies, but not in the case of recognized brand names.

Cheap is Relative ! Usually My Relatives LOL!!!! - Seriously Though The Information Given to you By Joe Ryan and the other Members in this forum is useful and wise ! When you can buy Verbatim single layer Disc for About .25 cents or so each on sale and often find Sony disc for about the same How cheap do you want to go ? Poor quality disk are actually more expensive to use in the long run Because of wastage / poor quality ,incompatability problems ect... & Then you have to buy more disc & Better quality anyways ! so Starting out with quality disc will ave you money in the larger scheme of things !!! If you wamt some unsoliciotd advice Here goes ! Buy in Bulk if you can , Supermediastore.com Meritline.com, & Rima .com are all reliable vendors ! Carrying multiple Brands of Media & accessories. Both carry Taiyo Yuden Media ( The Good stuff ) as well as other Brands too ! Get free shipping if you can ? It's no use getting a killer deal and then having to pay killer shipping fees ! You may want to use a two or three tier media philosphy Taiyo yuden , Sony or Verbatim for Critical Projects /recordings and Ritek/ Ricohjpn for Give-aways - For the family ect !!! I'll probably get Fussed at BY more experienced and knowledgeable Afterdawners for saying that But I've had a good run of luck with RItek/Ricohjpn disc ( Branded as Maxell's Officedepot , & Tdk respectively !!! - Would I rate Them as highly as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden ? No but They are the least expensivr Media I would /will Use for myself & family !!! - Other than that the advice the other gentleman gave is spot on ! Do a little shopping ,Get your Free Shipping & Good Luck !!!!

ritek/ridata/arita all seem fine.. I have thousands. samsung pleomax are ok too.

maxell 10% fail on burn.. and 5% fail even if completed.. 17.5% overall failures.. what price compared to verbs? Is it 17.5% difference??.. I doubt it.

tdk/memorex/datawrite.. I use as coasters.. I don't even bother trying to burn them these days. (people give me disks for bulk projects.. they get charged when they give me crap that will damage my burners)

Verbatim discs are all made to Verbatim specs with Verbatim materials. While the plants are owned by other companies, the discs are still Verbatims. They are not re-branded CMC or MBI media. Big difference.

Companies like Maxell and Memorex buy from a manufacture and re-brand under their own label. Big difference from how Verbatim operates. Maxell hasn't have Japanese discs in several years now, it's all CMC or Ritek now.

The high amount of failures seen with Ritek and CMC media makes such an assertion seem odd. While Ritek may have an in-house "A-grade" standard that gets sold to brands willing to pay more for a relatively meaningless term, it's a far cry from what consumers would come to expect from a real A-grade product.

Let's be honest here -- nobody sets the grading standards anymore, and haven't for at least 5 years now. There is no oversight body. I could fill a blank with raw sewage, call it "A-grade", and there's nobody who could say otherwise.

CMC manufactures Verbatim discs using a Mitsubishi dye. It's true that Verbatim/Mitsubishi sets the specifications and provides the dye and the stamper, but the production is CMC production. CMC also produces TDK, Imation, Memorex, and HP for Imation TO IMATION SPECIFICATIONS. That means the lines and equipment and processes are all specified as well as the quality specifications of the finished goods provided by factory test results and correlating test results from incoming inspections. Not so big a difference after all, if honesty is really what you want.

The Philips book standards determine the grade level. Everyone still uses those standards as definitive. They all use the same test equipment to ascertain the results (with the exception of one company not mentioned). Compatibility is another issue. A "high amount of failures" is often due to incompatibility, and consumers who do not understand the complexity of the issues assume that A-grade means it works and B- or C-grade is something less reliable. But A-grade material from Ritek or CMC may fail on a drive simply because the drive is not compatible with the discs. Inverse stack 8X DL is a great case in point--probably more uniform production but greater incompatibility. That greater incompatibility leads many people to accuse IS material of inferiority when it is more likely that the product will be free of contaminants.

There are electrical standards that are defined and determined by book standards, specified by buyers who are willing to pay for the best product, and checked by both manufacturer and buyer with identical equipment (internally calibrated but, unfortunately, not correlated often enough); and there are cosmetic standards that are defined for all A-grade product, and examples are on all the walls of the manufacturing plants for operators to use for comparison. That would seem to me to be set grading standards and not a "meaningless term."

JoeRyan - was hoping you would pop up somewhere; please would you have a read thru this link ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/800567/4896702 and the rest of that thread (just the bits regarding DL burning) and if you'd be so kind would you mind clarifying the 'burning 8x DL media at 2.4x' debate in there please. I have no such knowledge, don't know if it's something to do with inverse stack discs/urban myth or whatever.. Could do with someone who knows what they're talking about :).
Cheers.
