I was wondering, besides being harder to load, how can games be affected by being damaged and/or being played in a slightly damaged console?

Well, if it's damaged enough, a PS2 could break your disc. Like, physically shatter it.

Some units also had a issue where the ribon cable from the laser could make circular scratch on the disk if the cable came loose from it's glued-in location. I know this happened to me on one of the first slim-line units.
