I'm looking at modding my dusty PS2, and I'm not exactly sure where to start. I have a bit of welding experience, so if I really needed to solder something into the console, I probably could... but it's been a long time, and I have a bad streak with nearly breaking things while doing something as simple as installing a new dvd drive into my computer.

That being said, it would be extremely helpful if somebody could give me some tips on the best way to mod my PS2 without running the risk of breaking anything. Also, a general idea of how expensive each option is would be fantastic.

Thank you for your time :)

If it's dusty, then it is probably old enough to work with freemcboot. Do a forum search or a google search, or look around at sksapps.com

It's about 5-6 years old. How do I see if it's old enough to work with that program?

I took a look at the system and the model number is SCPH-39001/N. Date code 3B.

Ok so I did some more research, and I'll probably end up going with an actual chip, instead of the swap disc thing, or the memory card exploit (mostly because I'm more comfortable with dealing with the hardware, than trying to figure out how to program all the software).

So really, what I need to know now is, I read that there are solderless mod chips, and something about... plug and play chips? I could really use more info on the differences between them.
