The other day my PS2 started doing this, its out of warranty and not modded.

I've taken it apart to clean it and whatnot, and tried my Metal Gear Solid game again and now can see that the lens is actually coming up and hitting the DVD, leaving a scratch all the way around in a perfect circle.

Obviously it's probably scratching the lens as well as the DVD, but does anybody have a clue as to why it would even be touching?

This is a silver slim PS2 and has worked great until now.

Thanks.

There is a cut in the ribbon cable that connects the laser to the chip. The one that is tapped down to the base.

Can you buy these online for fairly cheap?

I'm not sure if that could would cause the problem though.

I have a similar problem with my ps2 but only with CDs. When I put a CD in (usually a ps1 game) it can't read it and it scratches the disk in a circle. It also makes some weird noises (crackling). I restart it for about 10 times and it works. When it finally loads the game it works but slowly scratches the disk until after 5 times the disk becomes unreadable.
DVDs work fine

replacement lens is needed LOL

If your ps2 can read cd's but not dvd's and vise versa you need to change your lens!

DVDside CDside and vice versa is dead...

The ribbon can be bought & replaced yourself. Search eBay and you'll find one (make sure you buy the correct series; 7000 or 9000).
I bought a used PS2 that was unmodded. The previous owner said the lens was bad and needed replacing, but I cleaned it with some isopropyl alchohol and it works perfectly now. You should try this before replacing the lens. Get a Q-tip or earbud and apply some Isopropyl Alchohol to it (make sure it is moist and not wet). Then gently rub the 'eye' of the lens in an up-down' motion and wipe with the dry side of the Q-tip.
That said, if you still see no improvement, get a replacement online (you can get the lens only or the whole assembly) and fix it yourself. There are plenty of tutorial videos on YouTube.

This is not exactly true at all. The laser produces more heat then you think and this can mess up calibration. You need to calibrate my guess is to higher the voltage. This can be a simple process or a very difficult one. Get a meter take the laser out and do it the simple way.

Never think a laser is dead because its not reading something, also grease the rails with white lithium grease.

cheers.
