I know this is in the wrong area but there isn't anything about PSOne on the forum. I have a PS2 mod-chipped, all good and recently obtained a PSOne (SCPH-102) for free and kept it in a cupboard as I had no use for it. The other week I messed around with it for a laugh and did the disc swapping thing to play backups (Put original PS1 game in, wait for it to load to PS screen and switch with copy etc etc) and it worked fine.
The next day I accidently just left the copy in the drive and somehow it booted into the game without struggling (and no disc swappng), it can be jerky on videos before the game loads and sometimes jumpy with audio tracks but other than that it played fine. My initial thought was that the console had been chipped but to my surprise the warranty sticker was intact and after taking it apart there was no modification or soldering attempts made on the console. It plays PAL copies without problems but refuses to play NTSC (it is a PAL console). Does anyone know what is happening?? Im pretty sure it shouldn't do this and it boots up better than my modded PS2 (Messiah v1).
I find it very interesting and hopefully someone will be able to explain what is actually going on.
Ideas?

interesting.. it's possible (though uncommon) that somebody has at some point actually flashed the onboard bios.. I do remember hearing about such a procedure many years ago, but never saw one actually done. It involved (from memory) replacing the bios prom with a flashed eeprom and I would guess anybody skilled enough to do that would do a very professional (and pretty much invisible) job. FYI.. the stickers can be removed and replaced with a hairdrier with no visible damage

Theres no other way without adding an extra chip to defeat the hardcoded media check.

The mad thing is that the console would have been purchased from a shop and this kind of operation would have been impossible. The console purchased to be placed in a childrens care home many years ago and about 5 years ago it was upgraded to the PS2 (and later upgraded to PS3) and once it was upgraded it was placed in a drawer and was nearly thrown out the other month by the care home manager people. Unless modification was made by the shop or someone who worked there it is impossible for it to be done.
Wouldnt reflashing require dismounting the BIOS chip? It would be interesting to know how they do it in the factory (maybe using a programmer to a header to the chip on the PCB??) I'm assuming the CD check thing is all software based??
