For the Fat PS2( need the network adapter in order to hook a Hard Drive to it)
I dont know anything about how to do this on a slim ps2
(1)
(A)Download and install Free McBoot(must have some way to boot the program)
http://freemcboot.psx-scene.com/index.html
(B)Install a mod chip( don't know of any good ones since I do not have one installed)

(2) Download and install HD Loader
http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html

(3) Connect a IDE Hard Drive to the Network adapter(it has the connectors for)
PS2 Hard Drive Compatibility Chart
http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list

(4) Turn on the PS2 and run HD Loader, it will detect the hard drive and format it. Once it is done formatting it will allow you to install games to the hard drive via the dvd drive. Games must be authentic in order for it to install since the PS2 can still detect weather the games are official or copied. If you install a flip top, you can use an original to trick the ps2 into thinking that the disc in the drive is authentic, then you can swap it for your copied game/import and install it to the hdd.

Playstation 2-Free McBoot,HDloader 8.0c,Open PS2 Loader 0.7,80gb Maxtor HDD,SMS Media Player,PGen,SNES Station- Installed
GameCube-SDload,SD Card Adapter,BBA Adapter,2 Color Case,GnuboyGX,MPlayer- Installed

Once the disc is installed on the hard drive, you only need it if you want/need to reinstall it the hard drive. You should OWN the games for legal purposes
