Hi all,
Over a year ago, I installed a mod-chip into my PS2. The chip was alright, and it let me play my american PS2 imports on my PAL system without any problems. There was only ONE game that I couldn't get to work, and that was Dino Crysis for the PS1, the Japanese version. I got to the screen were it says "This game contains gore and violent images etc..." and then, moments later, a big red circle would appear on the screen with some text in the foreground (the text is unreadable, because it's got the same color as the background...).
I was a bit sad, because I really wanted to play Dino Crysis, but I had no other choice than to give up...
Fast forward time to last week. I picked up a shipment of Japanese PS2 games, including all the Silent Hill PS2 games, plus Silent Hill 1 for the PS1.
The games were all in perfect shape, but I wanted to test them all, just to be sure they worked (plus, I wanted to watch the cool intros). Note, this is the first time I use my PS2 for a VERY long time, so at this time I've totally forgot what kind of chip I installed into my PS2...
All of the games worked on the first try, except for one. And that was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. It just wouldn't work!
I try to remember what kind of chip I had installed into my PS2, but then, when I try to boot the game I see, just under the Playstation 2 logo; "Matrix Infinity 1.99".
Alright, that was easy, I thought. Now I know that is that's the one I have!
I do some research about the chip and it turns out it's supposed to be "the shit". Well, that's nice and all, but anywhere I look it says it's supposed to run ALL PS1 games and ALL PS2 games... so why won't it run Dino Crysis and SH:Shattered Memories??
I tried some more with SH:Shattered Memories and after MANY reboots and fiddling around in the Matrix menu settings, I got it to work. But the next time I wanted to run it, it was the same thing all over again. Apparently it didn't have anything to do with my settings in the menu. I also tried to get Dino Crysis to work as well, and I actually got it to work ONCE! But that was it.
Today, after I had desperately tried to get SH:Shattered Memories to work for like 15 mins, I was like "Screw this!" and I brought the PS2 to my desk and opened it to see if there was something wrong with the cables connected to the chip or whatever.
What do I see, if not a frickin' Modbo 4.0! - In other words, a Matrix Infinity clone (if I'm not mistaken?). I can't honestly say WHY I bought this instead of a real chip, because it was too long ago. But it doesn't make any difference now anyways...
So, what to do know? (Sorry about the long story btw, I just wanted you to know all the facts).
In the menu it says Matrix Infinity 1.99, but the chip is a Modbo 4.0 - What kind of firmware is installed on the chip do you think?
Is the chip's firmware upgradeable, and IF I updated it, would I be able to run these games I'm having problems with?
Do you think I should buy a new and better chip? If so, please provide me with a link to the store that sells them.
All I'm looking for, is the best solution to get my games working with the least amount of hassle.
Thanks in advance!
/T

Please, if anybody can help me with this, please let me know.
- What firmware is on the Modbo 4.0?
- Would it be worth it to buy a Matrix Infinity chip and replace my Modbo 4.0?
- Can you recommend a place that sells this kind of chips?

theres nothing that wrong with the modbo chips.. they take the infinity firmware (modified somewhat) .. but as with everything.. you can't guarantee every single game will work.. some have some very funky protections on them.. and some rely on specific parts of the original console bios to get them loaded.. namely.. they have a second or third media check/bios check routine built in to the game itself.. It's been some years since I even saw a ps2.. but thats how I remember the state of play.. even a dms4 pro wasn't actually guaranteed to boot every single game from every region on a console..
