Alright, so, about a week ago I got all of my stuff in line for playing international games and backups, and it's worked great, but have had a few issues. However almost everything that has bothered me so far, when I went to google and searched, has led me straight to this forum. I just hope this is the right subforum for it!

And in almost all conditions, this forum had topics that revealed the answers to my plight! uLaunchELF being the most recent find a thread here explained, but there have been many others. So I felt with my most insurmountable issue, I should come in person. Forgive me for the length of this, but I hope to give all relevant info.

Anyway, everything I've played so far works perfectly, except for 4 games that for some reason just do not work. All four coincidentally are from the same company.

Before I begin, here's what I'm using.

Swap Magic 3.8 Coder USA DVD (I also have the 3.8 Coder USA CD)
Flip Top Lid
Slimline PS2 SCPH-75001 (Version 14?)
50 Pack of Philips DVD-R Discs (I have been told these are low-quality...)
A uLaunchELF boot disc (Used only to load GameFAQs saves onto Memory Card)
Alchohol 120% (For burning)

So, onto the issues?

Final Fantasy X: International (NTSC-J)

The most common one to give me troubles. I wanted to play this under the New Sphere Grid, as well as in English (which is natively supports thankfully), but I seem to be affected by the "Look" glitch. That is, in the opening when Auron says "Look" the camera never cuts to Sin, and then everything basically locks up. I've been told backups, dumps, and discs in general suffering from this has no solution, and that a further glitch happens later on a boat ride.

Is there any solution, and if not, is there anyway to get a Save file from say, after Ifrit, using unmodified new sphere grid? I believe that's the latest I heard there being any glitches.

Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System (NTSC-J)

My main copy of FF12 works just fine. A unpatched version of FF12 IZJS works too! But failing to find a independant patch, I was forced to rely on a prepatched version. And it doesn't load - period! I found that booting Swap Magic in PAL rather then NTSC will load the game, though since my TV isn't PAL the scanlines go all funny... Is there a proper patch I can use for the unpatched FF12 NTSC-J disc I got? I believe I can dump and reup it.

Kingdom Hearts: RE:Chain of Memories (NTSC-U version)

Another hit and miss. The game loads up fine, loads boot saves fine. But trying to start a New Game freezes up on the first CGI cutscene. Is it the quality of my discs?

Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix+ (NTSC-J)

The biggest issue of all! My raw dump works just fine, but unfortunately, as you'd expect, it's completely in japenese other then voices. I have found a english patch, HERE...

Down the page is "KH2 Patcher rev4", which is the program, and "KH2FM English rev5" which is the patch itself. According to the instructions, I just drag the patch into the patcher, type in the location of the raw ISO dump, hit enter, and good to go!

Unfortunately, after doing so, the dump once burnt to a disc does, well, nothing. It won't even load to the title screen, which is odd as my dump used to work. I even used some GameFAQs saves via uLaunchELF to run through various worlds. So either I'm redumping wrong, or the patch is wrong or... what?

Anyway, these four games are the only ones giving me problems. Thus far I've 100% tested others, Ratchet and Clank trilogy, Jak and Daxter trilogy, Sonic Unleashed, Psychonauts... so far only Square games have given me any problems. Likely it's because all of these (baring RE:Chain of Memories) are NTSC-J, but that shouldn't matter with swap magic (right?)

I'm thinking one of my major players in issues is my DVD-R's are of pretty low quality, I'm looking into getting some Sony or Verbatim's soon.

Sorry for the longness, but I felt I should keep all my questions bundled up together, instead of spamming various questions across the forumspace...

Here's a few troubleshooting tips.

1. Upgrading your DVD's might help. It also might not. I use Maxell DVD+R's for my backups, and as of yet haven't had any luck (I've posted in this forum about it, no response.) but am still optimistic.

2. Use ImgBurn for burning the ISO onto the DVD-R. From what I hear, it's the better of the two.

And 3. Write the file at 4x, not max. This greatly reduces the risk of a write error.

Best of luck, mate.

Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it.

Thanks. For the Kingdom Hearts games, upgrading my DVD's helped immediately. I guess on the patch I had it working all along, just was burning with crazy number of errors. Lousy discs didn't help I guess...

I always did it at the lowest speed my machine allows, which was 4x. I'll check out ImgBurn soon for FF12. I'm almost certain though it's a hopeless battle to get 10:International to work without a save-dump though. Wonder if there's any cheat codes that reset the Sphere Grid, maybe I can use that to play sorta if I can find one further in...

Thanks for the ImgBurn advice however, gonna go try that right now on 12.

Good advice Levi.tupper

Also if you can't get those games to work with Swap Magic 3.8, then you could install fmcb 1.8 to memory card, and patch your ISO with Esr disc patcher, then use ESR r9b to run those games.

Haven't played them in long time, but I am sure they all worked.

Depending upon your PS2, whether FAT or slim, some PS2 like DVD-r media better.

I listed my PS2 specs in the opener, and the advice Levi.tupper gave, along with switching DVD-R media to a higher quality brand, got 3 working.

The Auron "look" freeze in FFX:International is the only unsurmountable hurdle left. You can see the glitch in action on THIS Youtube video. I don't think any combination of media will work.

Is there a method perhaps for booting from a USB Flash Drive (I do not own a external HDD)? I'd expect it to be crazy slow, but it just has to last until I get to the first Save Point.

Else I gotta go somewhere else and find someone to upload a Expert Sphere Grid / English settings save file and hope that's the only glitch. I've heard rumors of a second freeze at Kilika after the boat...

You can boot from a usb flash drive same as external usb hdd.

Just use OPL v.8 to play from usb drive

Hopefully that helps

Well... it would have, had I a flash drive big enough. I forgot.. the file is over 4GB, and that's biggest I got.

But this thread can be closed, I found the FFX Save Game Editor, using the files it comes pre-made with, I managed to forge up a save right after the glitch. If anymore happens, I can just bypass that section I guess?

Thanks for trying though. The IMGBurn info has helped alot with smoothing out FF12's scenes, and has made KH2FM+ much smoother, before it'd glitch out on the title screen 1 out of 3 tries.
