Trying to connect a HDD to my PS2... but can't

I got a Western Digital 250gb IDE HDD from newegg, and it came in the mail today. I tried connecting it to my PS2's network adapter, yet the connectors don't meet up. They're about 1/8-1/4" off alignment.

I can't seem to find anything online about anybody else having this problem, except for 1 thread on Gamespot where somebody claimed that WD HDDs typically have problems with alignment. Obviously, not a reliable enough source to make a solid decision on.

So, I'd like to know, does anybody else know if this is a common problem with WD HDD's, or hard drives in general? Or did I just happen to get a crappy product by luck? Or perhaps it has something to do with my network adapter being 5-6 years old?

Any thoughts on the topic would be greatly appreciated!!

Some specific models do not work...western digital is notorious for this.

To use this drive, you must remove the metal cover from the inside of the network adapter...this will let you get at the screws that secure the connectors. The power and signal connectors are on seperate boards, so you can remove the screws from one of them, so both will fit.

You know, I thought about doing that... I was going to try, but one of the smaller screws was in so tight that I was about to strip it trying to get it out. However, the problem I see in that, is that if I do it, I can't slip the metal plate back on, because the connectors will be too far apart for it to fit. Will that serve as a problem?
