I'm sorry if these questions are already posted, I've looked around a bit and can't find much. I don't have alot of time to search forums unfortunately -_- so here is this.

Alright, the other day I found my old fat ps2 in the wardrobe, I stashed it 'cause the laser was on it's way out and went out and got a slimline one. The crappy slimline is on it's way out (it's held up 3 years, nice job) and I figured I'd softmod my old ps2 and run games off it's hdd.

A few of the things that I could not find are :

Is there anyway of running .ISOs off the hdd or do they need to be .ELFs?

Assuming the answer to the previous question is no :

Can I get .ELFs from an .ISO somehow?
Having to re-rip all my ps2 games would not only kill me on the inside, but i've always kept backups of my ps2 games (just incase) and there are a few I don't own anymore due to misuse by people other than myself. *insert potential rage here*

Do I need to use a boot disk all the time to load up said games off the hdd?
Since the laser is nearly dead it's a bit inconvenient, I read something about loading a program onto a ps2 memory card which doesn't require a boot disk but nothing indepth, nor any links.
Any info on that would be greatly appreciated.

And that's about it. Sorry for the long read of noob-like questions that I'm sure are out there somewhere. Any light on these subjects would be greatly appreciated.

the program that loads the exploit with just a memory card is called free mcboot. the program that loads isos from the hard drive (not actualy isos, but basicly the same thing) is called hdloader. HDL Dumx 0.8.6 has everything you will need to load games to the hard drive through the network, using your computer.

You are a legend, if you read this post again, (for god knows what reason) thank you so much.

I randomly stumbled across something today and any info would be appreciated, but I will find out about those programs which may make this following question pointless :

Do you know if it's true that by simply changing the extension of the SLES/SLUS file in an ISO to .ELF makes it a valid .ELF?

Cheers

I don't think it will.
I have tried it and it does not work. ISO and ELF are 2 different from each other.
When you have your IDE HD you will use USBUTIL ver2.0 that will convert the iso into 5-6 files, but when you see it on the screen, it will be whatever you named your ISO.
The only ELF files that work are HOMEBREW ELFS, MEDIA PLAYERS, DOOM, and EMULATORS( sega, snes, psms, atari, nes etc)
