okay, i might be going out on a limb here asking if i could possibly just use my old ps2 as a storage device. i recently purchased a network adapter for the ps2. i have a ps3 which is a media server and i also have a WD TV Live device. I love messing around with electronics to try to get them to do other things. I have an old hard drive that is the reason i bought the network adapter for the ps2. it is a 100gig. that i know is compatible with the lan thing.
now what i was thinking was i could use it as a video streamer like the ps3 and WD TV Steamer. the definition is not important as long as it worked and was decent quality on an older large screen tv. maybe one i could watch videos on my old laptop using the ps2 as an external hard drive.
i have a vista i was trying to use a program that needed direct x to run which was not compatible with the program to make the boot disc. so i gave up.
now i would like to know if there is a way to maybe wipe the ps2 whatever and just make it an external hard drive. i mean 1 gig for my older lap top would be great.
you can't really do what you are wanting it ...but you can play .avi movie files using sms and store files on it if you have the right stuff put onto it. although the only way to copy files to it is either ftp (which is kinda slow) and usb which is only 1.1 so its also kinda slow and the thing uses a lot more power than a external enclosure which you could get one for an ide harddrive newhere for 5-20$ i got one for around 10 off ebay. neway if you still want to "store files" on your ps2 install freemcboot. look at this site for a few tutorials on how to install it.
I was looking online to maybe upgrade the 1.0 USB to a 2.0 USB. I looked into it but was not sure if I was reading something for PS3 or ps2. So I gave up a bit. Um I got a modem for it or a LAN box thing for the back. With the 100 gig hard drive I was hoping to figure something out. I bought a kit for the sms boot with the memory card and disc and a network disc as well. I read a little about mcboot. But only booked marked it on my phone since I was distracted with a Linux version for the ps2. Thank you. I'll let ya know what happens.
okay so i have been doing some research and came up with a very promising solution.
Action Replay does would do what i want it to do. But action replay is no longer made and the fact that certain version do not work with my FAT 50001 it is difficult to find a version that would work with my ps2 since mostly the versions that the action replay disc's are are not listed.
this is what i read on the web site
Unfortunately, some newer versions of the PS2 console are not compatible with early versions of Action Replay Max below Version 3.10. To check the version of your PS2, locate the sticker on the back of the system, beside the SONY logo there will be a number that starts with ?SCPH?. If the following number is 50001 or 50010 then you have one of the new PS2 consoles.
Since the ActionReplay v2 has been discontinued for several years, since December 2003, and is not sold in stores, we no longer supply upgrade or replacement discs. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
plus im not exactly sure if you can update the version from an older version or not. i have yet to get that far.
but my idea as the days and years go by is becoming more and more difficult to do. 5 years ago this would be more possible.
Quit wasting your time, sell the p2 & get an original xbox & either softmod it or hard, it will do what you require
1-install any sized hdd
2-install games to hdd & play with out need of disc
3-install apps that can be OS's of linux or windows or both inc xbmc
4-play movies installed to it's hdd with xbmc dash
5-stream said movies
6-you now have a portable media center of games, picture, movies
7-connect to you tube & apple trailers etc
check you tube for vids there's bound to e plenty of an xbox 1 in action

i got an action replay max disc in the mail today. i didnt know that there were different versions. i got the one without the media player, which sucks.
this may be a waste but it also gives me something to do to pass the time. a little hobby i guess.
I FINALLY GOT IT! I even found a Netflix disc to play in it. HD loader did apps. The whole thing. The issue with the Netflix is that it is only for 640x480 tv's so it is fuzzy on my new tv. I have yet to try it on my older tv. That will be tomorrow. So the hard drive reads the DVD's read. Everything works. I bought an ARMAX disc but when I bought it I didn't get the one with the media player so I had to buy a disc to make an exploit. Used the ARMAX disc to put the files from the USB onto the memory card. Yada yada yada. But I thought "wander if I can get Netflix on there too?" So I tiptoed it and found that they do have Netflix for it. Ps2's are almost newly released in Brazil and since Netflix is new they released a disc for it. I found it got one and installed hdloader onto my ps2 and put in the Netflix DVD I saw flashes of colors and it booted. I was thrilled. I tried to watch a show and it was blurry :-(. So now I'm going to try and find maybe an upscale something to make it look better on the tv. Today I'm going to try and see if I can stream videos from my network through it as well. Sms does that I believe. Anyways I was very excited when I saw the bright flash of white on my TV screen. Thank u for assisting me.
